Liz is a Senior Consultant in our Construction division and has been with us since just after we began in 2017. Get to know Liz better through her Q&As below:
Who are you?
Liz. People call me Mitch, Mitchie, and Libby (by my nanas). If I ever get called Elizabeth, I know I’m in big trouble!
I live in Kāpiti with my husband, three young sons, two big dogs, and my cat. It’s a busy household, but I wouldn’t have it any other way; well maybe a bigger house might help actually.
What do you do at Archway Recruitment?
I started up the construction division of Archway almost five years ago now.
There are now three of us on the team across New Zealand so my primary focus is Wellington and the Lower North Island now.
I love the construction industry, it’s ever-changing, and not too PC and I love seeing how a team of people can make a building go up.
I’m fortunate enough to choose the clients and candidates I work with based on similar work ethics and I work on a quality rather than quantity approach, taking the time for the consultative piece of my job which I love.
What do you do when you are not at work?
When I’m not working, I’m hanging out with my boys, playing mum taxi, and taking them to various activities. I also love spending time with friends and extended family where a few glasses of wine are usually involved.
How many candidates on average do you interview a month?
20
What is the funniest thing someone has said in an interview?
Less a funny story and more odd. I had a Site Manager come into the office as a walk-in interview.
The guy wouldn’t tell me which company he currently worked for, his current salary or salary expectations or any other pertinent information, so I could find him a new role; but he couldn’t understand why I wanted to know. He told me he was entitled to his privacy (remembering this guy came to me looking for assistance).
This was in the days before LinkedIn and other social media (yes I have been in recruitment for that long) so I couldn’t check anything about him.
Needless to say, he wasn’t placed in a new role through me. I wonder what he’s up to now.
If you could give a candidate one piece of advice what would it be?
When looking at a new company, think about what’s really important, money pays the bills, yes, but we spend a large portion of our lives at work, think about the culture, the learning opportunities, and the social side, not just how much they will pay you. It’s about balance.
If you could give a client one piece of advice what would it be?
If you like someone you’re interviewing, let them know at the time. Candidates are nervous and it really does help if they know during the process that they’re doing well.
You’ll find they relax more and you can have a more meaningful conversation
What career did you want to have when you were a kid?
As a kid, I wanted to be a vet but as I got older, I wanted to be a clinical psychologist working in high-security prisons to find out why people committed the crimes they did!
Not sure what that says about me?!?!
What is your superpower?
Making vegan baking taste like regular baking, no one ever knows the difference!!
If you were a movie star, who would you be?
Bond 007! All the travel, cool gadgets, cool cars and beautiful people. I’d be in heaven.
