Who are you?

Grunta from the Kāpiti Coast!

Grew up in Paekākāriki and still living on the Kāpiti Coast. I have a three-year-old boy and one-year-old identical twin girls, plus twin cats called Ritchie McClaw and Nala. I was an egg specialist for ten years in my earlier career as a chef. Enjoy fishing, golf, and rugby (more so prior to having three kids under three!).

What do you do at Archway Recruitment within the Construction sector?

I recruit for management and technical roles within the Civil and Built Construction sectors. It’s like being a detective, instead of finding the suspect who has committed the crime, I’m trying to find the right candidate for the right company. It’s a needle in a haystack stuff, which takes a lot of investigation, information gathering, and hard work.  

What do you do when you are not at work?

Currently perfecting the technique of changing nappies and coming up with innovative ideas to get vegetables into my three-year-old. I also enjoy coming up with new choreography for Wiggles dance parties in my living room.

How many candidates on average do you interview a month?  

In this market, as Scribe once said, “not many, if any”.  

Tell us a funny story about working in recruitment

In one of my earlier roles, we took photos of each candidate we interviewed. On one particular day, one of the candidates randomly pulled the ‘blue steel” from Zoolander… I will never forget it, it was so unexpected, and oh so funny. 

If you could give a candidate one piece of advice what would it be?

Try not to burn any bridges. New Zealand is a small country, everyone knows someone who knows someone.

If you could give a client one piece of advice what would it be?

Get creative when it comes to hiring but don’t oversell yourselves and your company. Be transparent – I am continually hearing candidates saying their reasons for leaving is that the job is not what it was made out to be!

If you’ve had Recruitment as a second career, what was your first?

Professional Chef.

What is your superpower?

I’m a Super Dad first and foremost.

What is something you are passionate about outside of work?  

Love following sports and enjoy the finer things in life, good food, good company, and good wine. 

If you were a movie star, who would you be?  

Jim Carrey, in Ace Ventura… That Rhino scene is a bit like the current candidate market.
