How do you make sure you’ve got the edge when it comes to employment?
Now more than ever when applying for jobs you want to make sure each application gives you the best shot at securing the position. With an increase in job seekers in the market, think about how you can create an application that will give you a point of difference when it lands on the recruiters desk.
Recruiters receive an average of fifty applications for each advertised position and with limited time to review each resume, if you don’t stand out your outcome could be determined within minutes.
We’ve pulled together some tips from the team here at Archway Recruitment who are responsible for placing hundreds of talented candidates in jobs each year.
Let’s help you secure your dream job.
Customise your resume for each job application
Whilst you will have a framework for your resume, each job will require a different skill set or an area of your experience will be greater than others. Use your resume as a way to demonstrate the relevant experience to the job you are applying for.
Take the time to read through the job description and understand what the employee is looking for. Articulate your skills and experience from previous positions to align with what the job description outlines.
Update your Linkedin Profile
Recruiters will do their own desktop research on staff beyond looking at your resume so make sure you’ve got everything up to date. Updating your Linkedin settings to let recruiters know you are open to opportunities. Make sure your profile is up to date with skills, experience and peer recommendations.
Demonstrate your attention to detail
It might sound simple, but you’ll be surprised at the volume of resumes we receive with simple grammar mistakes. Take the time to ensure your resume has good formatting, impactful writing with clear and concise points. It’s critical to make sure you have used correct grammar and spelling, find someone that you trust to review your covering letter and resume.
Consider new study or experience
Maximise the downtime by looking at some study or qualifications you can gain whilst searching. With heaps of short and medium term courses available both on campus and remotely study can be a great way to build your expertise.
Hustle
Don’t expect the good jobs to come easily, if you’ve found a job you want to secure think about ways you can build confidence with the new employer. Is there a mutual connection? Do you know a friend who works for the company? Or can you find the employer’s phone number or personal email to introduce yourself?
For some people hunting for a job during these turbulent times can feel like groundhog day. Making sure you keep a positive mindset during your job search is key to ensuring you are on your a-game when the right opportunity arises.
