Build Environment Quarterly Update
Discussing Consultant Trends and Industry insights from October – December, 2020.
Archway Recruitment specialise in supporting small to medium size companies with their recruitment. We have an experienced team across New Zealand with offices in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
We’ll be bringing you quarterly insights from Archway Consultants who place Candidates in roles across Engineering, Architecture, Property and Construction.
The words ‘Covid19’ has been talked about more than we ever wanted, and we are pretty stoked to see the back of 2020. Despite the forecasts our Archway Recruitment job board is busier than ever, and we are all feeling super positive for 2021. We currently have more jobs than we’ve seen before across similar periods year on year.
New Zealand experienced candidates are in demand!
It’s a fine balance with recruitment, you need to have the right person, for the right job at the right time. We are currently in a very job heavy market with huge demand on candidates and not enough candidates to fill these roles. This makes for great opportunities if you are looking for a job with employers offering greater flexibility, pay and job security.
We’ve seen a lot of success with our recent placements for SME consultancies and main contractors and candidates are echoing this with reports of greater responsibilities, more individual projects, client facing positions and advanced career progression.
As an employee now is the time to make sure you are in the right job or alternatively investigate your options on the market and maximise the opportunities being presented in an industry with an employee shortage.
The future of work is fast tracked
We are seeing increasing numbers of experienced Kiwi candidates return to New Zealand. It’s exciting to be welcoming this calibre of candidate however this can sometimes be a longer-term play. Candidates (and clients) should be conscious of 3 month wait times of MIQ facilities and tightening rules on testing prior to departure. Clients should also expect returnees to take a few months to come back up to speed with the NZ work environment before seeing the real benefits and added value their international experience should bring to their office. We are expecting the influx of returning experienced Kiwi candidates across UK and US to continue within the first quarter of 2021. Archway have had great success with remote recruitment for placements within New Zealand. It might mean some late nights and early mornings for the team to interview and reference check but securing this experience is well worth it!
With employees more in demand we’ve seen increased loyalty towards current staff. A lot of our clients have used the last twelve months to review HR policies and ways of working. The future of work has been fast tracked with Covid. These benefits include finding ways for flexible working arrangements in what can be a challenging industry to work remotely. Some staff have also reported ad hoc pay reviews and more focus on career development.
There are certainly some positions that continue to be in limited supply. These include Geotech Engineer, Structural Engineer, Civil Engineer, Quantity Surveyors and Registered Architect. Opportunities are plentiful in the larger cities but also our recruiters here at Archway have had great success in the last year with giving people better lifestyle options with our numerous clients throughout the regions.
All signs are positive for the build industry.
Kāinga Ora has given the industry a strong boost with confidence to create jobs across New Zealand. We’ve also seen an increase in aged care, multi-storey apartments and school builds that support the high demand for skilled talent.
